Video Security System

I’ve been looking at a subscription video security system where, if the alarm is triggered, a signal is sent to a monitoring company and they decide if they need to call the police or what have you. It’s pretty expensive if you count the full year’s subscription cost, but a friend of mine at work suggested using IP video cameras. I guess it works a little like webcams, but they’re actually full-fledged security systems that I could use myself to check in on the house while I’m at work. She didn’t know a lot about it, she said she saw it in a magazine she gets. She’s going to try to find the article for me, but I thought I’d ask around here if anyone knows about this kind of system in the meantime. Has anybody here heard of a video security system like this?
